Barry Grimes FCIOB

Barry has a huge level of relevant experience in the Construction Industry, ranging from apprentice to regional managing director of a national contractor.

He served a ten year period as a Governor of a technology college in the Thames Valley, helping to guide the College through major change in Incorporation, to FEFC Control. He also chaired committees at the college to appoint new auditors  and to select a new Principal.

Barry has had extensive involvement in CIOB branch affairs in chairing Berkshire and Oxfordshire and his current role as Chair of the East Midlands Branch.

He was involved in setting up the Berks and Oxon Project Manager of the Year Competition in Reading, attracting sponsors and local Companies to attend, which is now in its fifth year.

He has a wide ranging current role in Construction, acting as Business Development Consultant for several firms, helping to shape their Business Plans.

He has been instrumental in setting up the Wessex Best Practice Organisation, now part of “Constructing Excellence”.

Barry has also championed sustainability measures over many years and was a founder member of the South East Centre for the Built Environment (SECBE) in Reading, now part of SEEDA.

He is currently a Site Monitor for the “Considerate Constructors Scheme”, covering East Midlands sites, this gives him relevant experience of current site performance, and a chance to influence best practice issues.

Barry is very pleased to be a member of the new Board of Trustees for the CIOB and hopes to have the opportunity to help guide the Institute through the challenges of the future. One of his goals is to ensure that Members play a more active role in Branch and National affairs, through the new Members Forum.
