Finding a builder

There are a number of ways to go about finding a builder.

For small domestic work, we recommend bodies such as Trustmark.
TrustMark is a joint industry, government and consumer initiative designed to help the public find reputable tradesmen.  Registered firms must meet government standards although a clear complaints procedure is in place should anything go wrong.  More information can be found at: www.trustmark.org.uk, or by calling Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.

In addition there are many reputable Trade Associations who provide a level of protection in specific service sectors.

Recommendations from family and friends can be useful, but you still need to check that the builder they used is suitable for the type of work you have planned. Make sure that references are still relevant given when previous work was undertaken.

Yellow Pages and other local directories can provide a list of building firms in your area, but these sources provide no guarantee of quality.  You need to be cautious – do not always believe what adverts say.

Some local councils hold details of reputable building firms – check the website of your local council or Trading Standards office, or contact them by phone.

For larger building works the Chartered Building Company/Consultancy (CBC) scheme run by the CIOB helps you to find an accredited building company or consultancy in your area.  Visit the website at: www.cbcscheme.org.uk or telephone 01344 630743 for more information.

Be suspicious of tradesmen knocking on your door, particularly if they want to sign you up to an agreement on the spot.  By the same token, adverts that come through your door should also be viewed with caution, especially if they only have a telephone number as a point of contact.  A reputable firm should give the address and telephone number of an office or headquarters.
