Landscape Architect

In a nutshell

Landscape architecture is the design of the spaces between buildings. This includes spaces such as motorways and country parks where there are no buildings at all. Landscape architects are dedicated to improving the quality of the environment by designing and managing the external spaces around us. They have to use artistic skills and an in-depth knowledge of human activity and the natural environment to design areas in towns, cities and the countryside which work for the public. Landscape architects can work for private practices, local authorities or government organisations; as part of a large team or as individuals.

In depth

Their work includes:

  • Surveying, analysing and checking out a site for development in an urban or rural setting
  • Creating concept designs for an open space
  • Using computers to model and experiment with landscape designs
  • Learning about the surrounding environment and responding to it
  • Working closely with other professionals (architects, designers etc) to find the perfect solution
  • Liaising with all kinds of clients to meet their demands, the needs of society and the environment

The people

Landscape architects are sensitive to conditions in the environment and are able to adapt their designs accordingly. They spend a lot of time liaising with contractors, architects and the client, so good communication skills are essential. They also have a broad knowledge of soil conditions, planting and environmental issues.

Qualifications required

Studying an HND in subjects like garden design or landscape management will allow you to work as a garden designer. To become a fully-qualified landscape architect you should study a relevant degree. Landscape design will be the main subject area and you will be taught to map, analyse and survey all kinds of spaces, often using computer software. There will probably be a mixture of studio design work, practicals and lecture-based teaching.

Salary

A landscape architect with eight years' experience earns an average of £26,379 (source: www.building.co.uk).

Getting professional

To qualify as a chartered landscape architect, after both your degree and the successful completion of a one-year postgraduate diploma, you will need two years' relevant practical work experience. This will entitle you to apply for associate membership of the Landscape Institute and enable you to take the Institute's professional qualifications.
