It will also provide participants with an overview of the basic principles of drinking water treatment and the implications of contamination.

Course Outline:

Day 1 - Potable Water Treatment Technologies - An Introduction

Drinking water originates from precipitation and rapidly absorbs both natural and man-made substances which generally render it undrinkable without treatment. The aim of Day 1 of this course is to provide an introduction to, and basic understanding of, water treatment which will produce an adequate and continuous supply of water that is chemically, bacteriologically and aesthetically pleasing.

  • Session 1 Drinking water sources and characteristics
  • Session 2 Screening, Storage & Aeration
  • Session 3 Pre-treatment, Coagulation & Sedimentation
  • Session 4 Filtration & Disinfection

Day 2 - Wastewater Treatment Technologies - An Introduction

Wastewater is a complex mixture of natural inorganic and organic material mixed with man-made substances that is discharged to sewer and ends up at a wastewater treatment plant for purification. The aim of Day 2 of this course is to provide an introduction to, and basic understanding of, wastewater treatment technologies which bring about the removal of pathogenic micro-organisms through a combination of physical, chemical and biological processes.

  • Session 1 Composition of Wastewater and Aims of Treatment
  • Session 2 Preliminary & Primary Treatment
