This course is designed to contribute to the Appreciation (A) & Knowledge (K) elements of the Institution of Civil Engineers' new Development Objective E2 - 'Manage and Apply Safe Systems of Work and CIWEM Mandatory Competence C3'.

Part of the under-pinning knowledge required to demonstrate the achievement of the ICE Attribute No.6 - 'Health Safety & Welfare' - will also be provided and will help delegates to create 'A sound knowledge of legislation….'

Organisations which are able to manage H,S&W successfully display a number of common characteristics. They have H & S risks under control and they achieve a progressive improvement in their injury and ill health record.

Either in your current role or in the near future you may well be expected to take an active part in helping your organisation to develop these beneficial characteristics.

Whilst the other two seminars in this series have examined the 'off site' activities this one will concentrate on the management of 'Site' H,S&W.

We will:

·         Examine the statistics relating to site H & S - what lessons can we learn?
·         Establish the main and underlying causes of accidents on site
·         Identify which of the plethora of Regulations are important to you - on site.
·         Study Part 4 of the 2007 CDM Regs (Duties relating to Health & Safety on Construction Site) and how do they affect you e.g.
o        safe places of work
o        excavations
o        cofferdams & caissons
o        reports of inspections
o        prevention of drowning
o        traffic routes
o        lighting
·         Consider the implications on site activities of recently introduced regulations
o        the control of Vibration at Work Regs 2005
o        the Working at Height Regs 2005
o        the Noise at Work Regs 2005
·         Carry out a Hazard Spotting exercise
·         Perform a Risk Assessment
·         Consider the Principles of Control of Hazards

Self-assessment exercises will be used at appropriate times throughout the day.
