Course Objectives:

The aim of this course is to provide an awareness and understanding of urban drainage systems, including their historical context and development - from flow generation, through conveyance to disposal - and become aware of various issues and future trends relating to urban drainage. This is NOT a drainage design course.

Course Outline:

·         Historical context and development - Bazelgette's Embankment, Disease, etc.
·         Sources of urban drainage flows - surface runoff, foul sewage, trade effluent, and others?
·         Urban drainage systems - separate, combined, and "partially separate", SuDS
·         Some relevant legislation
·         Estimating storm runoff, domestic sewage, and trade effluent flows
·         Sizing sewers - hydraulic calculations and use of HR tables/charts; practical exercise.
·         Components of a sewerage system:
- sewer pipe materials and sizes, both old and new
- wide and narrow trench conditions, bedding
- manholes - changing standards
- combined sewer overflows (CSO)
- culverts and water courses
- pumping stations
- treatment works
- discharge outlets (outfalls)
·         Managing urban wastewater - issues and future trends 
 
Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course the delegate should:
·         Have a broad background understanding of the history and function of sewerage systems as a whole
·         Be able to carry out simple calculations to determine runoff and flows and be able to size sewers
·         Be aware of some of the key environmental issues relating to urban drainage and urban wastewater management
 
Intended for:

This course is intended for recent graduates with various professional backgrounds whose work involves urban drainage. Others may find it useful but should check that the content meets their needs.
