My day job is as Regional Director with global management technical consultancy WYG Engineering Ltd based in Cockermouth, Cumbria.  We deliver multi-disciplinary design and asset management consultancy to a wide range of clients throughout a range of sectors, including nuclear, education and regeneration.

I want to do all I can during my tenure as Chair of The Faculty of Architecture and Surveying to address the significant challenges that are happening within the construction industry. I am privileged to work alongside some of the leaders of our industry on the FAS Board and the wider CIOB and want to contribute to ensure that the skills from this talented group are utilised for the benefit of our present and future members.

The Faculty of Architecture and Surveying (FAS) represents the interests of architects, surveyors and related consultancy disciplines within the CIOB.   The key objectives of FAS are to respond to the ever-changing needs of the industry with respect to education, training, standards and research.

FAS currently operates within four sectors: design, property, surveying and the specialist division.

Design Management is an area where FAS scholars have provided valuable research results.  The outcomes have provided insight into this subject, informed the working group, lead by John Eynon, FAS Board member, who is currently engaged in the production of a Design Management publication, the research results have been used to inform the work of the Education Group.

Faculty of Architecture and Surveying Scholarship supports research in the field of architecture and surveying and offers an annual scholarship award of £2,000.  This scholarshiip is awarded in partnership with the Worshipful Company of Constructors founded as the Company of Builders in 1976 and received its Grant of Livery and its current title in 1990. The Constructors’ Company embraces professionals from all parts of construction, as well as those, like lawyers and accountants, who work with the industry. Members of the Court personally assist scholars and representatives of scholars’ employers right through the scholarship process.

FAS Board representative on the Scholarship Panel reflects on the scholarship:
The one year period of a scholarship passes very quickly, and much intensive work needs to be completed in a short time.  Often scholars arrive with excellent university results, but their experience is about to move into a completely different league – without the security of their tutors and classmates.

The topics are generally based around articles they have read or deficiencies they have observed in practice and mostly they are hoping to form some loose notions into a researchable topic.  In addition, the fear of proposing an insufficiently substantial investigation, leads them into attempting far too much.

From the beginning, each scholar faces rigorous examination from a panel of senior practitioners and academics.  To add to the complexity, the brief is to deliver a proposition that will be useful in practice, with the rigour of academic research.

Only a little way into the process, scholars must be asking themselves why they ever agreed to be involved in this programme.  However, the panel is there to help the scholars and encourage them with suggestions on how to focus their work.  Regular reviews enable the scholars to feel that the topic is really developing and presentations to the panel enhance their communication skills.  All too soon, it is time to present the findings to a significant audience.

For those who have worked with the scholars:  It is so rewarding to observe real outcomes being presented with consummate skill.  Although weary at the end of this intensive process, the scholars not only receive tangible rewards for their contributions to knowledge and huge acclaim for their achievements, but they also have become secure in their new-found professional confidence.  These scholarships are an activity in which everybody delights – scholars, employers, sponsors, professional bodies and review panels; for the benefit of the Construction Industry and the whole Built Environment

The Scholarship process:  An agreement is first reached with a company to act as a host for the scholarship. The company then selects a suitable candidate for the award and puts their details forward to the CIOB and the Worshipful Company.

During the scholarship, the scholar remains in full employment and is paid their normal salary by the company.

At the beginning of the scholarship, the scholar gives a presentation on the proposed topic to an invited audience of CIOB and Worshipful Company representatives. This provides an opportunity for discussion and comment.  Review meetings with an individual representative from each organisation, for which the scholar produces a short progress report, are then held in not less than three-monthly intervals. These meetings ensure that work is on schedule and the scholar receives any necessary support.

At the end of the 12 month scholarship period, the scholar must produce a written report of 8,000 – 10,000 words. A rehearsal presentation is then given to a small CIOB/ Worshipful Company audience and this is followed by a public presentation at a venue and event chosen by the host company.
