Membership Grades

Grades of CIOB membership are available to those who have achieved recognised levels of academic and occupational success. Depending on the level achieved, applicants will be eligible for one of the five grades of CIOB membership outlined below.

Fellow (FCIOB)

A Chartered member who has worked at a senior level in the industry for at least five years. Will also have had input into either the industry at large, academia, education or the Institute.


Member (MCIOB)

Person who is fully exempt from CIOB academic requirements, has a minimum of three years professional level experience and has passed the Professional Review.


Incorporated (ICIOB)

A person who has:

  • full exemption from CIOB academic requirements

or

  • HND in construction or equivalent; or 
  • S/NVQ Level 4 approved by CIOB; or
  • Full Membership of Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists; or
  • Other qualifications may be approved on an individual basis.

Candidates who do not meet the full academic requirements must also have at least two years construction work experience at higher technician level.

Candidates who do not hold the equivalent of Honours degree level qualifications will need to gain further awards before progressing to Chartered membership. For advice contact us on + 44 (0) 1344 630706 or memenquiry@ciob.org.uk.


Associate (ACIOB)

A person who has either

  • minimum of an HNC; or
  • SMTS certificate and diploma; or
  • NVQ Level 3 - approved by CIOB; or 
  • Other qualifications may be approved on an individual basis.

All applicants for ACIOB must have at least two years experience at higher technician level.


Student

Online Student Applications  

Free Student Membership is available for up to four years to all students engaged in full time education.

All other applicants will be required to pay an annual student membership subscription fee of £21.00

Please be aware that Students on the following courses will have to pay a registration fee of £65.00 (in addition to the annual subscription):      

  • Certificate and Diploma in Site Management (C/D SM)
  • Certificate in Site Supervisory Students (CSSS)
