Routes to Membership (MCIOB)

Membership of the CIOB puts you on a path of career advancement that leads to the very top of the profession. Progress is made through a combination of study, examination and experience, culminating in the award of Corporate Membership and the designation MCIOB.

The CIOB membership structure is such that it allows members to move through it at a pace and style that meets their individual needs.

Every applicant for Chartered Membership is required to sit the Professional Review, having completed one of the following routes:

 

 route A   

  
 CIOB accredited degree (hons)

  candidates with CIOB accredited degrees

 route b

  
  Non-cognate Route

   This route is for professionals working in the construction
    industry with non-cognate qualifications.

  • UK honours degree or equivalent, that is not in a construction-related discipline
  • Chartered level membership of another professional institute

 

 route c

  
 NVQ5 (recognised by the CIOB)

  candidates working at Contracts Manager/Director level -
  often with no academic background

  • Completion of award

  • Incorporate membership (ICIOB)

 route d

  
 Graduate Diploma Programme 
 (GDP)

  a development programme for graduates with non-cognate 
degrees

  • Completion of programme = Incorporate membership (ICIOB)

  • Plus Professional Development Programme (PDP), NVQ4, or 3 years' professional experience in the construction industry

 

 route e


 Experienced Practitioner
 Assessed Report (EPAR) Route

  candidates for this route would typically have been working 
at senior level for 10 years

  • Part A = assessment based on report

  • Part B = oral examination focused on technical knowledge

 route f


 Experienced Practitioner
 Assessed (EPA) Programme

  candidates would typically have 5 years' experience in 
management

  • Part A = paper based assessment = Associate membership (ACIOB)

  • Part B = EPA assignments and examinations

 

N.B. Other awards can be considered on an individual basis upon application (applicants should be aware there is a charge for this service).
