For more than 20 years the Chartered Institute of Building has been working in China promoting the value of its professional qualification and opening the door for other UK Professional Bodies to get involved.
For the first time in its history CIOB membership in China has become the largest pool of members outside of the UK, narrowly overtaking the Institute’s membership in Hong Kong with almost 2300 members.
“We are proud to have been involved in China for such a significant period of time and equally proud to call many of China’s leading construction lights our members or fellows,” said Michael Brown deputy chief executive at the CIOB.
He added “Our work in China goes much further than just membership figures. Through our connections we have created pathways of knowledge and professionalism between the UK and China sharing best practice on Eco-towns, conservation projects, education and even Olympic Games construction.
“The challenge for us has always been to manage the appetite for CIOB membership in China. Our ambition is to connect leading professionals with each other wherever they maybe. That’s what a community like the CIOB offers. We couldn’t have had such success without the help of so many members and enthusiasts who share our vision for a connected best practice industry.”
The CIOB’s international strategy for China continues to focus on those in leadership and influential positions, in what is the largest construction market in the world. The CIOB aims to improve support of existing members and increase its engagement of future leaders and young construction professionals. Currently the CIOB has 3 full time offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing.
