The Built Environment continued its close association with the CIOB by hosting an evening "dissertation workshop". The aim of the evening was to facilitate introductions to industry professionals to support 3rd year Construction Management students' primary research for their final year project.

Chris Moss, Novus Hampshire Chairman and Solent University Alumni and Construction Director of Evolution5, a leading Construction Management company, chaired the event. He said in his opening introduction that “In my experience, Solent University students choose excellent industry related topics for their dissertations, but find it difficult to contact Industry Professionals. So in an attempt to address this issue, and to make access to professionals easier, we have organised this event with members of the CIOB committee and other professionals. Members were very happy to come along to be interviewed and give advice."

The evening was planned along the lines of a "speed dating session". The students interviewed a range of Construction Professionals ranging from recently graduated assistant surveyors to seasoned professionals with over 20 years’ experience.

Simon Hodges, Chairman of the Hampshire Centre of the CIOB said "The committee and I all agree that this kind of direct engagement is great and we know we can make a real difference in supporting the students."

Comments from students were that they had not only received valuable advice and guidance from CIOB members related to their project topic, but also an insight into life as a construction professional.
