Over 60 members and guests attended the CIOB Durham and Wearside Centre CPD event presented by Blake Newport in conjunction with commercial law firm Robert Muckle LLP. It was very informative and not only did it provide an excellent review of CIOB members design liabilities, but it brought to light some areas that had not previously been considered.

Iain Ferriman MCIOB from Walter Thomson Contractors Ltd said “I certainly left last night with a few issues for deliberation and I am sure I was not the only one listening to the discussions still continuing on the doorstep of the hotel, particularly about the duty to warn”.

Iain continued “The enthusiasm both Paul Bennett FCIOB and Mike Plews MSc put into the presentation kept me engrossed till the end and I was only disappointed that I could not stay afterwards so we could discuss some issues in more depth, as this, along with all contractual issues, are of great interest to me and play a vital part of my role within the company”

“I have sat through many lectures and presentations in my time. Presentations like yours are very rare and are an absolute pleasure to attend. I will certainly be attending all of your forthcoming CIOB lectures and recommending them to all colleagues”.

CIOB Durham and Wearside Centre Chair Ted Green stated: "the annual Blake Newport lecture is always very well attended and 2007 has raised the bar yet again".

Paul Bennett, Immediate past chair of CIOB Durham and Wearside added: "Mike Plews and myself successfully completed a taught masters course in construction law and arbitration at Leeds Metropolitan University. In the past we often found ourselves on opposing sides in lecture scenarios. Tonight just demonstrated what can be achieved by effective teamwork".

Mike Plews commented further: "it has been a pleasure to present to CIOB. A lot of hard work goes into each presentation so I am delighted everyone has found it of benefit and we have delivered what they wanted".
