The Future of Building Control – CIOB Consultation

Tuesday, May 06, 2008

The Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) has published government proposals for changes to the Building Control system in England and Wales. Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) members now have an opportunity to feedback on the proposals, which will form the basis of The CIOB’s final submission to Government.

The CLG’s proposal document covers five principle areas:

1. Developing a vision for building control
2. Establishing a better approach to the way we deliver regulations and guidance
3. Modernising inspection and enforcement
4. Providing alternative routes to compliance
5. Enabling improved performance and capacity

The CIOB has been involved in the development of these proposals through the Government’s Review of Building Control Working Group and as a member of the Building Control Alliance.

The CIOB now calls for its members to provide feedback on the proposals to form its final submission to government. We value your expertise and this is your opportunity to improve the building control system by informing regulatory thinking at the highest level.

To provide a platform for your response, we have summarised the Government’s consultation in the attached circular and feedback questionnaire. We also strongly recommend that you view the full proposal document which can be found at: www.communities.gov.uk/futurebuildingcontrol.

In addition, we have also set up an internal working group to look at the consultation in more detail. Their feedback forms the ‘Draft CIOB comment’ sections that you will read in the attached circular.

The final CIOB submission will be publicly available from our website (www.ciob.org.uk) from 11 June 2008. We ask that all feedback on the consultation is sent to us by Friday 30 May 2008.
