Flagship event in Swansea sails to success

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

The Swansea Centre's first star event at the Marriot Hotel in Swansea themed around the re-development of Swansea dockland area (SA1) and the waste management strategy adopted for the site was packed to capacity .

The event was co-sponsored by White Young Green who provided two speakers – Harry Jones, Project Manager and Jon Cooke, Associate Director.  Paul Thomas, Group Environmental Manager for Morrison’s Construction Limited and Huw Davies of the Environment Agency also made presentations at the event.

Forty delegates attended the afternoon series of presentations which were all professionally presented and well received.  Harry Jones set the scene by giving an overview of the SA1 re-development looking at the development history of the site and the WAG objectives on the re-development of this brownfield site.

Jon Cooke provided a technical presentation on the assessment of the ground conditions and models used to develop the waste strategy for the site which enabled re-use of the excavated soils and avoided large-scale land-filling off-site.

Paul Thomas talked about the role of Morrison’s as principle contractor in respect of various contracts across the site and how they dealt with a number of environmental issues such as the presence of Japanese Knotweed.

Huw Davies gave a presentation on the legislative framework associated with developments in waste management and associated waste legislation.  He touched on the introduction of Site Waste Management Plans in England with Wales likely to follow in the near future.

The event was a great success with an optimum attendance achieved and delegates expressing satisfaction with the content of the event as a whole.
