London Branch members take part in Nepal House Build Challenge

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Members of the London Branch Young Persons Committee – Novus, Annie Chan and Rebecca Hall are hanging up their office wear and management roles to pick up tool belts and trowels when they embark on a charity house building challenge in Nepal for the charity organisation Action Aid.

Rebecca and Annie, both age 25, are going to Nepal to help villagers build houses for poor and excluded families near Nepalganj.

The girls have signed up for the 11-day Action Aid Nepal House Build Challenge where they will work side-by-side with local people to construct family homes for members of the Kamaiya community – former bonded labourers - who are re-building their lives.

But before they set off in October 2008 Rebecca and Annie have to raise least £6,200 in sponsorship (£3100 each).

On the 18 June, Rebecca and Annie attended the CIOB Summer Reception at Emirates Stadium to meet with the other attendees and raise awareness of their forthcoming challenge.

Rebecca, a Trades Engineer with Bouygues UK, said: “I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead – For me there is no better way that a person such as myself can help people in the developing world then to offer my energy and skills through Action Aid’s challenge programme.  Annie, a Project Manager with Mace International said: “I’m honoured to have this great opportunity to make a real difference to the Kamaiya people’s quality of life. The homes we’ll help build will provide long term solutions in the fight against extreme poverty”

Simon Molloy, Head of Fundraising Events for ActionAid said: "Our Nepal House Build challenge gives people the chance to live and work shoulder-to-shoulder with a local community, not only will they be building vital houses for these families, but they’ll also be building strong friendships- they’ll understand how the community lives, the difficulties they face and the tremendous energy and drive they have to build a better future for themselves and their families.”

Rebecca and Annie are seeking sponsorship for this challenge and would urge you to get in contact if you would like to support them. If you would like more information please contact Rebecca: rebecca.hall@bouygues-uk.ltd.uk or Annie: annie.chan@macegroup.com.

Everyone from the London Branch wishes them well in their endeavour.
