Thursday, April 30, 2009
Kevin Sheridan FCIOB, is the newly elected President of the AEEBC (European Association for Building Surveyors and Construction Experts)
Kevin is a former President of the European Council for Building Professionals. He represents The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) on the AEEBC.
The AEEBC is a community of Pan-European professionals working in the Construction & Property industry in twelve countries spread throughout Europe. It was established in 1990 and represents over 350,000 building surveyors and construction experts who are professionally qualified in the technological and management processes by which buildings are designed, constructed, renewed and repaired in accordance with the national legislation of individual countries.
The organisation was formed to facilitate the promotion of the building surveying and expert professions in Europe, and the exchange of experience and information between professionally qualified building surveyors and construction experts. Its aim is also to facilitate training, qualifications and mutual support and recognition, to establish practice guidelines, and to support and promote the development of construction industry services in line with EU policy. Its expertise includes building pathology, asset protection, design and specification of new buildings, sustainability, health & safety and conservation of existing buildings.
Kevin takes over from Professor Trevor Mole who now becomes Secretary General of the AEEBC. He paid tribute to his predecessor and praised his enormous contribution to the strategic focus of the association. He also welcomed Jacob Ravn Thomsen from Denmark, who was elected Vice president.
“One of our primary objectives is to secure a level playing field for professionals through the establishment of a professional card leading to a common platform in time," said Sheridan. The EurBE card is at a very advanced stage and is designed to facilitate recognition of professional qualifications and experience and to promote transparency between different education systems so as to enhance professionals mobility in Europe and worldwide.
Kevin Sheridan has been involved within the CIOB in various capacities; as a CIOB Trustee from June 2008 to June 2009. He was awarded CIOB Honorary Life Fellowship in 2005, Distinguished Fellowship of the Architecture & Surveying Institute in 2002 and the Chair of the CIOB in Ireland’s Special Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Construction Industry in Ireland in 2003.
In response to his new role with the AEEBC, Kevin added, "The European construction environment is very challenging in the current climate and I am honoured to be chosen by my colleagues to advance the many strategic initiatives with a very talented and committed team”.
