CIOB President among construction's 50 most influential people

Friday, July 31, 2009

A judging panel from Construction News has compiled a 'Future 50' list of the people who will have the biggest influence on the built environment in the coming years.

The panel, hand picked for their expert knowledge of both business and Whitehall, were asked to make their selection from a list of over 100 names, which had been compiled from polls of the most informed managers in the construction industry.

The only stipulation for the poll was that none of the names could work for a construction company or trade body.

Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) President, Professor Li Shirong was 37th on the list, which also included David Cameron (10), Mervyn King (9), Boris Johnson (3), and George Osborne (1).

The judging panel

  • Michael Ankers, Chief Executive of the Construction Products Association
  • Rosemary Beales, Chief Executive of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association
  • Ken Dytor, Chair of the British Property Federation’s regeneration and development committee and Managing Director of Regeneration Investments
  • Vaughan Bernand, Chair of Constructing Excellence
  • Stephen Wells, Group Strategy and Business Development Director of Costain
  • Rick Willmott, Group Chief Executive of Willmott Dixon

Construction News comment that the list sparks a very interesting debate, particularly with the biggest economic downturn for a generation, a general election on the horizon, and questions over public spending and private funding.
