Wednesday 27th January saw the launch of the London Branch’s second Satellite Group. After the success of their first Satellite Group and the University of East London, the footprint for this new initiative expanded to include the second group.
The launch was part of the Sustainability Conference held at London South Bank University. The day was introduced and hosted by Gillian Trodden FCIOB, Chair of the London Branch. Samuel During FCIOB the head of the SSG launched the comprehensive programme of speakers with an overview of the objectives and mission of the group.
Our Mission is to support, mentor and share professional knowledge amongst members, towards the achievement of sustainable development.
The Objectives of the London Region Sustainability Satellite Group (SSG) are:
- To provide support and guidance to London members applying for the Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) qualification.
- To provide a learning and development environment including online sustainability portal, webinars, seminars and advice nights to London students and other members
- To provide coaching, mentoring and guidance to students and other members on new thinking, regulations and legislations regarding construction sustainability.
To share knowledge and experience amongst members.
The conference was a resounding success with a high number of positive comments received regarding the organisation, the programme of speakers, the venue and the content. The speakers on the day included:
Peter Head Chairman of the Institute of Sustainability, who provided a very informative insight in to the work of the Institute, Professor Tony Day who introduced The Centre for Efficient and Renewable Energy in Buildings - Educating for Low Carbon Buildings, a CPD Site Visit will be arranged to CEREB in April/May, to follow on from this presentation.

James was also awarded the CIOB medal for his Scholarship in partnership with the Worshipful Company of Constructors. The presentation was made by Bridget Boreham and Christine Rigden from The Worshipful Company of Constructors.
The afternoon session saw a comprehensive presentation by Dave Hampton, The Carbon Coach. Dave provided a different perspective of the current prognosis, and the changes we can make to impact on our carbon footprint. His presentation was very thought provoking!

The day was finished with a presentation by Neil Jefferson, Managing Director of the Zero Carbon Hub. The Zero Carbon Hub takes day-to-day responsibility for co-ordinating the delivery of low and zero carbon new homes and exists to highlight challenges and find practical solutions for those across the public and private sectors delivering zero carbon homes by 2016.
The Hub is a public/private partnership drawing support from both government and the industry and reports directly to the 2016 Taskforce.
Five Workstreams (Energy efficiency; Energy supply; Examples and scale up; Skills and training; Consumer engagement) monitor, co-ordinate and guide the zero carbon programme and provide a focus for industry engagement with the key issues and challenges faced when delivering zero carbon homes.
The first meeting of the Sustainability Satellite Group will be help on 24th February 2010 at the Union Jack Club in Waterloo, from 6pm. If you would be interested in attending please confirm your attendance with Danielle Baker, Branch Manager dbaker@ciob.org.uk for security reasons at the venue no one will be allowed to attend unless they have pre registered.
