Olympics To Create Thousands Of Construction Jobs

Tuesday, November 08, 2005

In an industry that already requires 88,000 new recruits every year, ConstructionSkills has warned that managing workflow will be vital if the industry is to deliver on all demands.

The 33,500 predicted jobs break down as 6,500 managerial, 2,800 professional, and 24,000 trade or craft roles.

While the Olympics will generate around £2.5 billion in construction output over the next seven years, this still only constitutes 7.5 per cent of the £34 billion worth of projects in the pipeline in the Greater London area

Sheila Hoile, Skills Strategy Director at CITB-ConstructionSkills, said, “With major projects currently on site such as Heathrow Terminal 5, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and Wembley, Britain is well-equipped for the task ahead. However, the years 2008-2010 are critical for London, with the number of workers on site at any one time in the South East area expected to peak in 2010. Good workflow management and effective leadership are vital to long-term success.”

ConstructionSkills has developed the Construction Skills Network, a cross-industry alliance that will revolutionise construction recruitment and training, and hopefully help deal effectively with the increase in demand for skilled workers.

The announcement of the results of the skills need analysis follows the government’s acceptance of proposals for a National Skills Academy for Construction, which will open next September.

ConstructionSkills has also unveiled proposals for the creation of a team dedicated to ensuring the smooth-running and efficiency of all Olympic projects.  The Constructing London 2012 team will recruit and train local people as part of an initiative to provide sustainable skills and job opportunities for residents of East London.

Mike Bialyj, Field Director at CITB-ConstructionSkills said, “This week’s announcements show our commitment to ensuring that the construction industry has a safe, skilled workforce in the right place at the right time to deliver on demand to 2012 and beyond.”
