STAYING INFORMED

The CIOB has recently launched its HTML Newsletter system with the objective to update its members on a regular basis with information on upcoming events and recent news in their area.  The CIOB in NE eNewsletters are usually sent out to our members on the 1st Tuesday and 3rd Tuesday of each month, with a branch newsletter every quarter.

We are pleased that the feedback from those who are receiving the CIOB eNewsletters have been very positive, as they found it a useful and informative way to keep in touch with the Institute.

Should you wish to receive our eNewsletters, please contact your Centre Administrator (dthorpe@ciob.org.uk) and she will be delighted to arrange it for you.  This option is also open to non-members.

The objective of the North East Branch is to serve its members and raise the Institutes profile in the North East region.

The three centres within the Branch are Tyneside, Durham & Wearside and Teesside.  Should you be interested in attending any CPD event, you will find relevant links to our Centre’s shown opposite with contact details for each Centre Chair and Centre Administrator who promote and co-ordinate events answering queries at local level.

PUTTING THE NORTH-EAST ON THE "MAP" !!

The success of MAP (Membership Assistance Programme) continues in the North East which was formed in October 2009.  During most recent professional interviews held at Jesmond Dene House we saw five candidates progress to full corporate membership of which 3 were on the MAP programme which undoubtedly assisted them all through the process to achieve their MCIOB status.

Well done to all those that passed and long may MAP continue to thrive and fully support members in the north east region to progress.

Should you be interested in joining the programme simply contact Jane Knox, Branch Manager CIOB North East on 0845 070 6149 or email jknox@ciob.org.uk.

Branch Chair - Ted Green
Ted Green - Branch Chair I work as a Senior Site Manager for Surgo Construction a leading Chartered Building Company based in the North East.  I have worked in construction for over 26 years for a range of local and national contractors. I completed the CIOB site management certificate and diploma at Northumbria University before moving onto a part-time degree in site management, followed by NEBOSH Certificates in Safety.
I strongly believe that the CIOB has a leading role to play raising the standards of the construction industry.

Becoming a Chartered member has given me more confidence in my everyday activities as well as being a benefit to my employer and our clients.

As Branch Chair I will encourage and be available to give advice to future members on how to progress through the different levels of membership as well as taking an active role as an ambassador of the industry within the local schools to encourage children to consider construction as a preferred option and dismiss the poor image and unjustified criticism often portrayed of our industry.

Ted is available to answer any queries regarding your involvement with the branch. Please contact him on Tel: 01670 365411, Mob: 07976 124486, or e-mail: greent@surgo.co.uk

CIOB Students engage on the Green !

Professional body students from CIOB, RIBA, ICE and RICS gathered for a Golf Day at Ramside Hall Hotel Golf Club on Friday 30th April 2010.

The team consisted of CIOB construction students studying at the University of Northumbria, which proved to be a great event for them to develop their social and networking skills in a relaxed environment.  It proved to be a hotly contested stableford 4 ball game with seven of the ten teams to score.  Despite the disappointing result a good day was enjoyed by all who participated and the team is looking forward to the event scheduled again for next year.

Awards Dinner at The Dene

Student of year

A gathering of guests attended an informal awards dinner at the renowned Jesmond Dene House on Wednesday 5th May 2010.

This was a unique opportunity to celebrate the recent success of the Student Challenge team from Northumbria University who represented the region at the National Final in March 2010.

All team members were present and received due recognition for their contribution and proudly placed fourth at the national final.

In addition Clare Middleton who was voted CIOB Student of the Year was also present with her parents to see her being presented with this prestigious award.

It was an extremely enjoyable evening with superb fine dining, first class service and an excellent forum to give recognition to these exceptional young professionals within our industry.

CIOB North East engage with students at Careers Fair

The school of The Built Environment, within Northumbria University held a Careers Fair on Wednesday 11th November 2009.

In addition to regional and national employers, exhibition and information stand opportunities were also provided for Professional Bodies.

Those in attendance included RICS, CIBSE, RIBA and CIOB.  The Chartered Institute of Building North East was represented by Jane Knox, Branch Manager and Diane Thorpe, Centre Administrator.

This was an excellent forum and invaluable opportunity to engage with students and promote the benefits of CIOB student membership, progression routes, target potential members and encourage attendance at regional CPD and networking events.

The purpose of the fair was to stimulate opportunities and create an environment where students could link with potential employers and employee representatives of the professional bodies, the collaborative approach was evident and the clarity of message was clearly achieved.
