Online learning resources - BSRIA Webinars
The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) are pleased to inform you about a series of online webinars being held by the Building Services Research and Information Association (BSRIA) a not-for-profit consultancy, test and research organisation, providing specialist services in construction and building service and IHS.
The webinars which have been created by BSRIA, are a series of live interactive presentations delivered over the Internet direct to your desktop, normally combining PowerPoint and a live presenter.
You do not need any special software installed on your computer, although you will need internet access and a telephone near your computer to hear the presentation.
Below you will find a current list of webinars which are coming up in the next few months. If you are interested in viewing more details of any of these webinars, or would like to book your place, please click on the link in each webinar section on this web page which will take you to the relevant webinar page. Here you will find more information about the webinar, cost and details on how to book.
Wednesday, September 17, 2008 - Building Regulations - an overview
Start time: 14.00
Duration: 60 minutes
Webinar Overview
In England & Wales, all building work must comply with Building Regulations before the building can be occupied. Similar regulations exist in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The regulations themselves and the large volume of supporting guidance can be overwhelming, even for experienced users. This webinar will cover the basics of Building Regulations and give sources for more detailed information.

Friday, October 10, 2008 - Legionnaires Disease
Start time: 16.00
Duration: 60 minutes including questions
Webinar Overview
It is almost impossible to keep legionella bacteria out of water systems but whether the bacteria are able to proliferate and pose a risk to health depends on how those systems are managed. Most of the outbreaks that hit the headlines are not caused by failures of technology but by failures of those responsible for the building systems to understand and react to the factors that influence the risk. The Barrow outbreak, which resulted in the deaths of 22 people, is a case in point.
The webinar will review the principles of legionella risk reduction and practical implementation of the guidance contained in HSC L8 "Legionnaires Disease: The control of legionella bacteria in water systems".

Thursday, October 23, 2008 – Key Performance Indicators and Benchmarking
Start time: 14.00
Duration: 60 minutes including questions
Webinar Overview
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Benchmarking are now accepted as valuable techniques that make a significant contribution to key business areas. Without some form of measurement how can an organisation manage the current changes and challenges in the construction industry or be able to provide evidence of sustained improvement in performance and practices? This webinar will provide a better understanding of the various suites of KPIs, how to interpret the KPI charts and key tools that are available.

Wednesday, October 29, 2008 - Whole Life Costing
Start time: 14.00
Duration: 60 minutes including questions
Webinar Overview
Buildings and the equipment and components that go into them are long term investments. This means that project costs can not be judged just in terms of initial capital investment.
Whole Life Costing (WLC) is a key tool to help clients, architects, engineers, facilities managers, contractors and product manufacturers understand how capital and operating costs can all be compared to help choose the option that cheapest overall. This webinar will introduce the principles of WLC and explain how it can benefit every organisation involved in the procurement and supply of buildings and facilities.

Wednesday, November 5, 2008 - Thermography in building services - an overview
Start time: 14.00
Duration: 60 minutes including questions
Webinar Overview
Thermography is widely used to identify faults in electrical and mechanical machines and buildings because it identifies temperature variations easily and many faults lead to temperature variations. The list of applications is endless.
New cameras, applications, and methods are developing but skill and experience are still required to get the most out of thermography. There are some common requirements for good thermography that anyone practicing or specifying thermography should know. These include: knowing the features of the object, its surface properties and acceptable temperatures, understanding the environment you are working in, obtaining a good image, differentiating between anomales, faults and normal temperature variations.

Tuesday, December 2, 2008 - Usable Building Controls
Start time: 14.00
Duration: 60 minutes including questions
Webinar Overview
Design teams place far more attention on expensive lighting and environmental comfort systems, but forget how building occupants will interact with them. Controls, though, are where the users and the building come together. Strategically this should be seen as an architectural issue, not hived off to engineers simply because the controls are connected to mechanical and electrical services. Worse still, the selection of controls is often left up to the controls subcontractor, who merely selects a controller from a cataloge that seems nearest to what is needed, with no thought as to labelling, usability or even appropriate location. Building elements like vents, windows and lighting systems often perform poorly due to shortcomings in controls usability
