CIQ Author's Page
Aims and Scope
The CIQ performs a unique and important function within CM literature. It is designed to enable access to research and information by a busy professional audience, ensuring that new thinking is disseminated to practitioners. As well as publishing an annual general issue, each volume features a number of special issues devoted to important topics in the discipline.
The CIQ is an international journal with thousands of subscribers, and is held in many university libraries as well as being read by a large audience of CIOB members.
Writing for the CIQ
All researchers hope their work will make a difference. Writing for the CIQ is a way to make a real contribution to positive change in the industry: your paper will be read by business leaders and decision-makers, informing real-world organisational policy.
The CIQ adheres to scholarly standards of reporting, but is not exclusively devoted to the classic academic paper. The emphasis is on good writing and effective communication to a wide readership. Informative papers by both academics and practitioners are welcomed.
CIQ papers tend to fall into one of three broad categories: some are 'information' type papers reporting on a topical issue of interest to practitioners and researchers; others present a critical review of current industry thinking or current practice; and the remainder, present the findings of empirical research.
This diversity provides authors with an opportunity to present a measured and interesting argument about their area of expertise. Whilst papers should be factual and appropriately referenced, the freer format enables the author to adopt a less rigid writing style: papers must present a balanced argument, but can incorporate a personal viewpoint and recommendations as well. Most importantly, authors should constantly evaluate the relevance and accessibility of the paper to construction professionals.
For more information, download the Authors' and Reviewers' Guides from the link below. There is also a link to the CIQ copyright form.
Prospective authors may find it useful to refer to sample papers as a guide (attached below). Whilst they tackle a variety of topics, potential authors should take note of their style, and the success with which they tailor their research to outputs relevant to practitioners.
(Potential authors should also note, however, that since these papers were published, editorial policy has been reviewed, and there is now a greater emphasis on minimising the number of references. Whilst there must, of course, be acknowledgement where appropriate, please try to avoid multiple referencing where possible. Ideally, the selected references should be 'signposts' to key texts, so that interested practitioners can find out more about the topic under consideration.)
