Student Challenge

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) recognises the importance of education, training and development within construction, as well as encouraging younger people into the industry. The Student Challenge competition is designed to allow teams of students from across the UK and Ireland to showcase their skills and knowledge.

Every year the Student Challenge puts to the test student teams from universities/colleges and industry to take on others and compete for a place in the Student Challenge final, where you could win the top prize of £100* each.

* Teams competing from Southern Ireland will be eligible to win the equivalent amount in euros.

And the winners of the 2012 Student Challenge are...

For the second year in a row students from Glasgow Caledonian University have won the Chartered Institute of Building’s Student Challenge Final.

This year’s challenge saw the students propose a design and build brief for a hypothetical new terminal at Manchester Airport – Terminal 4. The teams were asked to create an ‘Intelligent Airport’ that considers the whole life cycle of the building. There had to be recognition of the current construction improvement agenda relating to Building Information Modelling and the wider use of digital technologies, the importance of quality design and the pivotal role of sustainability.

What happens in the Final?

The student challenge's final challenge is to apply your construction skills and knowledge to a topical industry problem and provide suitable recommendations. The pressure is on from the start, as you are given a tight timeframe for researching and preparing your answers to present to our panel of experts in the afternoon.

To help you with your task throughout the preparation period you'll have access to experts, who will provide ideas and information. Your team will also be given sole access to an Internet connection and packs containing details relevant to the project. The CIOB Library can also be explored for further useful sources of information.
